The Wrath of God – Part III    Rejecting the Truth Discards the Wisdom of God (26-32)

The Wrath of God – Part IV   Man’s Sinful Judgment vs God’s Righteous Judgment (2:1-4)

Vs 1  People who judge others…  Are without excuse…  Because they too sin!

Vs 2  God’s judgment…  Is based on Truth

Vs 3  People who judge others will be judged!

We are mere men…  We judge others…  We sin…  We will not escape judgment.

Vs 4  God’s kindness, tolerance, and patience leads to repentance!

Vs 4  God’s Kindness Leads to Repentance

          2 Peter 3:1-9   =   God’s Patience

Psalm 90:4   For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a

                             watch in the night.

1 Tim 1:15-16  Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came

into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst.  16  But for that very

reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might

display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him

                             and receive eternal life.

Vs 5  Unrepentance Calls for Wrath

          Stubbornness  =  stiff-necked                     Acts 7:51

Acts 7:51   "You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just

like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!

          Unrepentant  =  un-turned                Mt 4:17

Mt 4:17  From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven

                             is near."

Day of God’s wrath  =  future

Ps 110:5-6  The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath.

6       He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of

the whole earth.

Rev 6:15-16 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty,

and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the

mountains. 16  They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and

hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of

                   the Lamb!

Vs 6-11       God does not Show Favoritism

6-                each person…

7-      those who do good…

          8.       those who are self-seeking…

          9-      trouble + distress

          10-    glory, honor + peace

          11-    no favoritism

What is Repentance?

          Elements:

                   Sight of sin…

Acts 26:18   “to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light…”

Lk 15   The prodigal son “came to his senses…”

He sa himself a sinner and nothing but a sinner.

                   Sorrow for sin…

Ps 38:18 (KJV)  For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

2 Cor 7:8-11  worldly sorrow vs godly sorrow

                   Statement of sin…  confession

1 Cor 11:31   “if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment.”

Lk 15:18   “…Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.”

                   Shame for sin…

Ezek 16:61   Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you

receive your sisters, both those who are older than you and those who are

younger. I will give them to you as daughters, but not on the basis of my

                                      covenant with you.

Lk 15:21  The prodigal son was so ashamed of his sin that he thought himself not

worthy to be called a son any more.

Shame is the result of the realization of guilt.

                   Scorn for sin…   Hatred

Rom 7:15  I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but

                                      what I hate I do.

Ps 119:104   I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every

                                      wrong path.

Surrender of sin…   Turning from it

Ezek 14:6  "Therefore say to the house of Israel, 'This is what the Sovereign

LORD says: Repent! Turn from your idols and renounce all your detestable

practices!

Acts 26:20   First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all

Judea, and to the Gentiles also, I preached that they should repent and turn

to God and prove their repentance by their deeds.

          Results:

                   A new attitude toward sin.

Lk 15:18-19  I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have

sinned against heaven and against you. 19  I am no longer worthy to be called

your son; make me like one of your hired men.'

Rom 6:21  What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed

of? Those things result in death!

                   A new attitude toward self.

                             It is radical:

Lk 15:18-19  I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have

sinned against heaven and against you. 19  I am no longer worthy to be

called your son; make me like one of your hired men.'

Rom 6:21  What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now

ashamed of? Those things result in death!

                             It is perpetual:

Rom 13:14  Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think

about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

                   A new attitude toward God.

Ps 130:3-4  If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

4       But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared.
