“In Christ”  --  Crucified and Resurrected

“In Christ”  --  Part III

Romans 6:5-10

Vs 5a         If we have been united with him like this in his death…

Vss 6 & 7   Explain vs 5a

(6)             For we know that our old self was crucified with him

so that the body of sin might be done away with,

that we should no longer be slaves to sin--

(7)     because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

(free from the power of sin)

1)     “our old self”  =  our old life = what we were in Adam before God saved us

Was crucified with Christ  --  it is done for!

          2)  “the body of sin”  =  the old nature  =  our inclination to sin

                   Will be done away with

God has taken us out of Adam and placed us in Christ!

He has caused us to die to the old life so that

our present inclinations to sin might be robbed of its power,

                                      and

we should be delivered from sin’s slavery!

How does sin in the body work?

                   The way we eat…

                   The way we sleep…

                   The way we function sexually…

Before the fall, Adam was able to sin.

After the fall, Adam was not able not to sin.

After salvation, we are able not to sin.

Once glorified, we will not be able to sin.

          Galatians 2:20              salvation                        old self

Luke 9:23                      sanctification                 body of sin

Vs 5b         …we will  certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.

          Vss 8 – 10 Explain 5b

                   (8)  Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

(9)     For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead,

he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.

(10)        The death he died, he died to sin once for all;

but the life he lives, he lives to God.

                                                                   (to glorify God)

          Future resurrection:       of the body

Present resurrection:      from the reign of death to the reign of grace

Php 3:10  “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection”

An expression of a desire to be victorious over sin!

The sin that made us subject to death is no longer master over us,

just as it no longer is master over Him!

Rom 6:4   We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order

that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the

Father, we too may live a new life.

Eph 2:6   And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly

                             realms in Christ Jesus,

Col 2:12   having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your

faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

Col 3:1   Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things

above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
