PART III

“THE DIRECTION OF PURITY”

In groups discuss the following question:

QUESTION #1 - What is true purity?

          Story of movie and Brownies

Pure – (Websters Dictionary) free from anything that taints, impairs, unmixed, clear

Oswald Chambers – “…purity is something that has been tested and tried and has triumphed, something that has character at the back of it, that can overcome and has overcome.”

Elizabeth Eliott – “Purity means freedom from contamination. From anything that would spoil the taste or the pleasure… It means cleanness, clearness-no additives, nothing artificial-in other words, “All natural” in the sense in which the Original Designer designed it to be.”

“Purity spans far beyond physical intimacy, it is in being blameless in every area of your life-physically, emotionally, and mentally.”

QUESTION #2 – How does that look in my life?

Relationally                            Academically                          Athletically

Entertainment                         Work                                                Sexually

FLIRTING WITH DARKNESS:

Where do you draw the line in the sand?

Is crossing that line when impurity begins or did it happen before?

Do we desire purity in our relationships?

Many teens today feel satisfied by meeting the minimum requirements, content with spending our time in the “grey areas,” flirting with darkness and never daring to step into the light of righteousness.

True purity, however, is a direction, a persistent, determined pursuit of righteousness. This direction starts in the heart, and we express it in a lifestyle that flees opportunities for compromise. If we truly seek to live pure lives, we can’t allow ourselves to detour from the pursuit of righteousness for even a second.

ONE STEP AT A TIME:  KING DAVID

2 Samuel 11

1.  Step one:  NOT GOING TO BATTLE    V.1

2.  Step two:  DID NOT DIVERT HIS EYES    V.2

3.  Step three:  LUST AND FANTASY   V. 3

          4.  Step four:  ACTED OUT THE SIN   V. 4ff

Impurity isn’t something we step into suddenly. It happens when we lose our focus on God. It begins in our hearts, in our motivations and attitudes.

“I tell you that anyone who looks at a women lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”  Matthew 5:28

We have to understand purity as a pursuit of righteousness.

Prov. 4:20-27; Eph.4:20-32

Living a pure life before God requires the teamwork of your heart and your feet. The direction of purity begins within; you must support it in practical everyday decisions of where, when, and with whom you choose to be.  The path you take with your feet should never contradict the conviction of your heart.

1.     If, we truly want to explore purity then we need to point ourselves in GOD’S direction.

2.  We cannot be on the edge of purity and explore righteousness at the same time.

PURITY IN ACTION:

1.  Respect the deep significance of PHYSICAL  INTIMACY.

“Honor marriage, and guard the sacredness of sexual intimacy between wife and husband.”  Hebrews 13:4

2.     Set your standards too high.

“Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.  2 Timothy 2:22

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature:  sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires……”  Colossians 3:5

“each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.  Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;  and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”  James 1:14-15

3.     Make the purity of OTHERS a priority.
